The Camera That Looks Like Glasses
What's New?
On 13 October, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) published an initial statement on smart glasses. These devices may look like ordinary eyewear while containing cameras, microphones and internet connectivity. People nearby may therefore be unaware that they are being filmed or recorded.
Why It Matters
The risk is particularly significant in hospitals, schools and workplaces. The EDPB stresses that manufacturers and service providers cannot transfer all responsibility to users. Products should provide clear and reliable recording indicators, such as prominent lights or audible signals that are difficult to overlook.
Recommended Action
Organisations considering smart glasses should define where they may be used, how bystanders will be alerted, what recordings will be retained and which systems will receive the data.
This is an initial statement containing preliminary guidance, not new legislation or an enforcement decision.
